Title A name given to the resource Grover, Eulalie Osgood Subject The topic of the resource Winter Park (Fla.) -- History Description An account of the resource Eulalie Osgood Grover, a local children's author, was probably best known as the creator of a series of reading primers for young readers centered around the characters known as the "Sunbonnet Babies." Miss Grover was born June 22, 1873, in Mantorville, Minnesota and moved to Winter Park in 1926. The Sunbonnet Babies Primer, published in 1902, was illustrated by Bertha L. Corbett and revolved around the adventures of Molly and May, two little girls whose faces were completely hidden by large sunbonnets. The primer was built around a 150-word vocabulary with later printings containing word lists to assist the teacher in picking out key words and phrases for emphasis. The Sunbonnet Babies Primer was a huge success and was widely accepted in public schools throughout the United states. In 1905 Miss Grover published a second series , The Overall Boys, which introduced little boy characters. Miss Grover's European travels provided ideas and material for Sunbonnet Babies in Holland, Sunbonnet Babies in Italy, and Sunbonnet Babies in Switzerland. These titles were primarily textbooks and used in conjunction with geography classes by second and third grade children. Miss Grover also wrote for junior and senior high school students. In her career she wrote twenty-seven books that sold over four million copies. Miss Grover died in Winter Park, December 18, 1958. Text Any textual data included in the document Ella Carruth’s Biography of Mary Bethune is Splendid Ella Kaiser Carruth, who makes her home at the Alabama Hotel, has her first book just off the Abingdon Press. It is a slender book, of only eighty pages, but it is a simple, beautifully written book . . . the biography of Mary McLeod Bethune. Titled, “She Wanted To Read,” it covers the life of a little girl who was born on a cotton plantation in South Carolina and who made her way from barefoot cotton picker to the world acclaimed college president and civic leader. It is the story of the courageous Negro girl who wanted so desperately to learn and share that learning with others. She kept at both projects from the day she walked five miles to attend school for the first time until long after she had risen to a place of honor among the world’s great . . . . a distinguished woman, proud of her country and her race, and dedicated to all man-kind. Mrs. Carruth, who has been very active in the Friends of the Winter Park Library and many civic and cultural affairs, was born in Cleveland, Ohio where she attended Flora Stone Mather College and Western Reserve University. She was graduated with an A.B. degree from Smith College, Northhampton, Massachusetts. Although she has written for magazines and newspapers, this is her first book. Mrs. Carruth, a former teacher, served as president of the trustees of Kirkland Town Library, Clinton, New York, where she lived for many years when her husband, William Massey Carruth, was associated with Hamilton College. Her book is cleverly illustrated with soft pencil sketches by Herbert McClure. It sells for $2.25 and is available in bookstores now. It should prove an inspiration to children of all races. Text Any textual data included in the document Her Mind to Her a Kingdom Is by Delane Heath “Mother,” I said to the gentle little lady who was ninety-two last autumn, “I’m going to capitalize on you.” “Oh, don’t,” she pleaded as she turned from watching the chicadees feeding at her window box. “Yes,” I said firmly, “I’m going to interview you and tell the world why your generation can recite reams and reams of poetry without faltering, whereas mine isn’t sure-footed even on the Twenty-third Psalm.” Until recently it had never occurred to me to think of all the treasures in Mother’s mind as anything except inborn parts of Mother, individual characteristics like her blue eyes. I had always just accepted them as one does everything connected with one’s mother. I never could memorize anything, and that too I had accepted – as one of my inherent (though minor) intellectual weaknesses. That each of us was perhaps typical of her generation was an idea that only lately came to me. It came in this way. In the Question and Answer department of a leading Book Review someone asked for the source of the line, “Dead while his voice is living yet.” “Rantoul” said Mother, “by Whitier,” and she proceeded to recite the entire poem and then to tell its historical background. “But how did you ever happen to learn that particular poem?” I asked. She answered that her brother had learned it to recite in school when it was “timely” poem – published in the daily paper. “And what anybody in our house learned, I always learned too – just by hearing it,” Mother added. “We children spouted poetry all over the house, in season and out.” A few weeks later in the same column was a question about a line which she recognized as one from a poem by Jean Ingelow – “Seven Times Ones.” I found the poem and commanded, “Say it all.” Say it she did. Since then one of my chief indoor sports has been to open Shakespeare or the Bible, or perhaps a book of poetry, and try to catch Mother in a misquoted line. She gives me little satisfaction. She can name all the plays of Shakespeare and quote long passages from many of them. The books of the Bible are equally familiar to her. The rulers of England from “First William the Norman, then William, his son,” down past the God-given Victoria, through the late lamented Edward to the present George she can reel off as readily as I do the table of twos (which I did master in my early youth). The Presidents of the United States roll off the tip of her tongue with equal facility – although she says she feels surer of the order of those she learned in school than of those during whose administrations she has lived. “But why didn’t I ever learn things the way you did?” I complained. “Because,” she answered, and there was conviction in her tone, “between my school days and yours there arose a great outcry against memorizing what one didn’t understand. All nonsense I always said.” And she went on to tell me how annoyed she used to be when her algebra pupils objected that they could not use the formulae they did not understand. “It doesn’t matter nine times out of ten. I told them, whether you understand a formula or not. Learn it, remember it, apply it. Perhaps later you will understand it.” I wonder whether there may not be at least a crumb of merit in this unorthodox, mid-Victorian theory. If there is virtue in it where algebra is concerned, why not much more when it is a case of storing literary masterpieces in the memory? “You have lots of fun with all the things in your head, don’t you, Mother?” I enviously asked. “Indeed I do,” she nodded. “You have no idea how many nights when I can’t sleep I say pages and pages of poetry to myself, or lines and lines of Shaespeare.” A great improvement over counting sheep hopping over a fence, I thought. “Well, Mother,” I said as she turned back to the chicadees. “I do know one line from Shakespeare that applies one hundred per cent to you: ‘My mind to me a kingdom is, such wondrous things therein I find.’” She smiled a slow quizzical smile. “Is that Shakespeare?” she chuckled. “Well, isn’t it?” I hotly retorted. “I should say the author was William Byrd,” she said, “and that the second line was, ‘Such perfect joy therein I find.” And that you have proved your point about your generation. If, of course, you are a representative member of it.” Am I. I wonder. And is Mother typical of hers? Description An account of the resource Bessie Galloway, daughter-in law of Dr. Henkel, is Thomas Henkel, Jr.'s mother. Bessie owned and operated two Winter Park businesses independently for many years. Due to the lack of public confidence in women's entrepreneurial abilities, Bessie G. Henkel, ran her insurance business as the sole-proprietor naming it B.D. Galloway Agency. Her business sustained her family through the depression. In 1994 Tom Henkel awarded an annual grant in his mother's name to the Business Studies program at Valencia Community College. This annual grant is called the Bessie Galloway Henkel Chair in Women's Studies in Business.
