<text>The Boyer Brothers, James Buchanan (b. 1934) and Horace Clarence Boyer (b. 1935) are two of eight children of the Reverend Climmie and Ethel Boyer of Winter Park, Florida. The received their education in the public schools of Winter Park and Eatonville and graduated from Bethune-Cookman College. The brothers were brought up in Faith Holy Temple Church of God in Christ, where their father was the pastor. Both played piano for services, and Horace directed the choir. They formed the Boyer Brothers when they were teenagers and sang throughout Florida.
When they were still in high school, they began recording on Excello Records, of gospel recordings in the 1950s. With Horace singing tenor and James singing barritone, the brothers sang two-part harmony on slow songs and used call and response on jubilee and shout songs. Singing in the sanctified style, they were adept and at building tension through the use of the vamp. Among their popular recordings are "He Understands, He'll Say Well Done"; "Step by Step"; and "Oh Lord, Be My Protector," composed by James.
In the late 1960s the brothers returned to college for graduate study. Each holds a Ph.D. and teaches at the university level, James at Kansas State University and Horace at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Because of the distance, the Boyer Brothers have sung only occasionally since 1980.</text>

Creative Talents At Work In Winter Park
Mrs. Dorothy Zeak knows the meaning of sharing. She believes that if you have a talent and you don’t share it that it soon goes to waste. And to prove that she practices what she believes the charming woman is giving of her time to teach other women the art of creating beautiful jewelry from collections of beads and how to crochet and do other handwork. Each Wednesday morning at 9:30 about 15 women gather at the Winter Park Community Center for a beading instruction. “It’s great fun and we are making some really beautiful items now,” explained student Carrie Fordham.
The women have made necklaces, earrings and rings from the collection of beads and elastic thread. “After taking the class for about 10 weeks we were able to make some Christmas gifts for friends and family and save a great deal of money,” explained Eula Pearl Jenkins, who is also program director for the Senior Citizens Club of Winter Park.
In addition, the women have also been doing quilting and crocheting. “We meet two days a week and the classes are open to anyone who might be interested in attending,” explained Kate Brewinton.
Mrs. Zeak has the help of a family member Rae Bonotto who works rights along with Dorothy and helps the students in any way that she can. “The students seem to enjoy the class and they are learning so fast it is a joy to see them challenged in this way,” explained Mrs. Zeak. </text>

<text>The long-awaited day finally arrived – the opening of the Central Florida Incubator and Resource Center at the Hannibal Square Marketplace in Winter Park. Winter Park Mayor Gary Brewer said he was pleased to be asked to participate in the opening of the Incubator, has the potential to “train people in how to manage that moment of opportunity which could make their business successful.”
“This is a day long overdue and I congratulate everyone who is involved,” said Orange County Commissioner Bill Donegan at the opening. “This is a historical event,” said Reggie McGill, area director for Congresswoman Corrine Brown (District 3). “We will make history in Central Florida.”
“A business development is the only way to bring dollars into a community,” reflected Milton Howard, founder of the Incubator.
“We will look back years from now and see how important this day was to this community,” said Don Dalton, president of the Winter Park Chamber.
“The opening of this retail section is one of the major concrete steps,” said Pamela Mann, Winter Park Chamber’s Minority Business Committee;
Also there to participate in the ribbon cutting and program were: Robert Klettner, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; Carolyn Wintston, director of the Chamber’s Minority Business Committee; Orange County Commissioner Mable Butler; Inez Long, Black Business Investment Fund; City Commissioner Joe Terranova, chairman of the Minority Business Development Committee; Pauline Davis, Minority Business Deelopment Center; City Commissioner Rachel Murrah; Bill Young, Metro Savings Bank; Rev. Seraaj, NAACP; Thomas Austin, president of the NAACP; Milton Howard, founder of the Incubator and Resource Center and Dan Bellows, who has been working with the Westside Community in developing the former rundown area in a thriving business community.
Also attending were Winter Park City Commissioners’ Al Jones, one of the first tenants of the Marketplace at Hannibal Square Center, Ken Smart, who owns a shoe repair business in the center; and many other business and community leaders. Prior to the ribbon cutting, Clarence Palmer entertained.
The opening of the 1,000 square-foot Hannibal Square Center is part of the second development phase of a community effort to reach a program goal of creating 250 new minority businesses and 1,000 new jobs by the year 2000. The first phase has already been completed and now funding is being sought for the second phase – development and start-up.
The Hannibal Square Center will serve as pilot program to provide practical experience to the development team as efforts continue to acquire a larger facility in Winter Park. This phase also will be used to complete the business plan and to secure lease commitments for space in the incubator. Creation of this facility allows the program to being assisting several small start up businesses and allows the development team to gain practical experience in the operating of the Center in a real life situation. It also demonstrates to the Westside Community a real sense of commitment and gives the incubator a place from which to operate until the larger facility is secured. The facility will contain three minority businesses in the developing stage as well as serve as an office for the incubator. The incubator will provide volunteers and to staff the reception area.
In order for the Urbanomics Program to achiveve the projected goals of new minority businesses and jobs, the Minority Business Center in Winter Park was established to provide the business incubator with low cost office rentals, secretarial services, technical assistance, business plans, business development, minority certification, planning, marketing, a computer center, accounting and legal expertise and technical researching; acquire working capital; educate program clients; provide government access and advocacy; motivate and inspire program’s business entrepreneurs and monitor program businesses and evaluate program’s progress.
According to the goals and objectives of the Urbanomics Program, the completion of phase two will demonstrate the viability of the program and will provide for the acquisition fo the main facility in the Crosby Building on Morse Boulevard.
After the ceremony and ribbon cutting, all were invited to eat barbecue, courtesy of Coach Woodruff.
This community effort is being supported by the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce and the City of Winter Park’s Community Redevelopment Program.</text>

Boyer, who recently returned to the neighborhood where he grew up, said he’d like to name the park after W.B. Simpson or Gus Henderson, two black men who served on the city’s council in the late 1880s. Henderson also was the publisher of The Advocate newspaper.
Another possibility would be to name the park after Charles Ambrose, founder of the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, which is still operating after more than 100 years. Lake Island Park was name for the (no more text)</text>

<text>Barbara King Loyd faced insults and isolation in 1964 to go to high school near her family home.
Miami – Barbara King Loyd didn’t set out to make history that fall day in 1964.
She just wanted to go to school in her neighborhood.
Her mother, walking by her side, told her she was doing the right thing – that she shouldn’t be forced because of her skin color or to travel across town to another school.
There were the other students – all white – milling around as usual that day, most looking on with curiosity and some hissing “nigger” as Loyd and her mother made their way up the school steps.
And there were the men in suits. Who they were, she didn’t know. “They’re here to protect you,” her mom whispered.
No one, however, could protect Loyd from the two years of loneliness that would follow – the name-calling in the hallways, the hate letters, the cold alienation that came from being the first black student at Winter Park High School.
Thirty-one years later, as the Winter Park Class of ’65 gathered at the Langford Hotel on Saturday for its 30th reunion, Loyd was missing from the crowd. She remained in Miami, doing her usual weekend routine: grocery shopping, errands, dinner out.
Though she visits Winter Park regularly, owns her great-great-grandmother’s shotgun house near Park Avenue and still dreams about opening a business there one day, she saw no reason to take the difficult trip down memory lane.
“What for?” Loyd said. “I really didn’t know anyone.”
It is a statement of fact, not of bitterness. Now 48, Loyd, a former Air Force seargeant, a mortician, and occasional piano player and leader in South Florida’s AIDS care community, thinks race relations have come a long way buth still have a long way to go.
She sums up the reason the same way she sums up why she preferred to stay home this weekend: After more than 30 years of court-ordered integration, blacks and whites still don’t know each other.
They may go to school together. They may work together, but they still live in different worlds. That’s the reason, she says, that whites and blacks will never understand their polar reactions to O.J. Simpson’s acquittal for murder. They have yet to cross the chasm that divides them.
“Certainly, you can’t walk in my shoes, and I can’t walk in your shoes, but we could walk together,” she says. “The trouble is, we don’t have the opportunity to do that. There just aren’t many opportunities to get to know each other and respect each other.”
Loyd certainly didn’t have the opportunity at Winter Park High, where a few students openly harassed her, more tolerated her, but most ignored her, a fact that some of her classmates regret today.
“Any time I think about the ‘60s and desegregation, I can picture her holding her books, purposefully walking across campus, alone,” said Marilyn Marsic Brown, now the spokeswoman for Pinellas County Schools. “Looking back now, I wish I had done something. I wish I had reached out to her.”
Loyd remembers only one girl who did. Her name was Carolyn and she invited Loyd to the Steak n’ Shake, where kids often went for lunch. Loyd was deeply touched but knew better than to accept. “I truly appreciated it, but I knew it would put her and me in an awkward position,” Loyd said.
As it was, the friendship proved awkward for Carolyn’s parents. After they complained, Carolyn, whose last name Loyd can’t recall, told Loyd it would be better if they were “secret friends.”
Loyd understood, she said, because she grew up in the ‘50s and early ‘60s understanding “her place” in the community, a place that always had been separate from whites.
It was a time when blacks could stand, but never sit at the counter in the downtown Woolworth’s when The Orlando Sentinel published a “Negro Edition” on Mondays, when the only white person Loyd knew was the piano teacher who came to her house to teach the neighborhood kids music.
Like much of the South, Orange County was dragged into desegregation by court order and legal threats. Though the U.S. Supreme Court banned school segregation in 1954, the Orange County School Board didn’t begin integration efforts until six black students sued in April 1962. That year, 18 black children enrolled at Durrance Elementary School.
During the next two years, the School Board continued tiptoeing toward desegregation, allowing – but not requiring – students to go to schools nearest their homes. Only black students accepted the invitation. Loyd’s mother, Carrie, who died three years ago, decided her daughter would be one of them.
“We felt it was time for a change and we felt she could do it,” said Loyd’s father, Scriven King, who still lives in Orange County, retired from the old Allen Drug Co. “We only lived a few blocks from that school, and we felt, ‘Why should we have to transport her all the way to Orlando if she could go to school right in our neighborhood?’”
In transferring from Jones High School, a vibrant center of black social life, Loyd gave up a lot. She was a majorette, in concert band and on the student council at the all-black school. At Jones, she was popular. At Winter Park, she was nobody.
But she kept her close friends. Many were from her neighborhood, and they helped fill the void left by loneliness of school.
She also drew strength from her family, her church and her community, the section of Winter Park where her great-great-grandmother and many other blacks had settled generations before. She still walks down the street there today, greeting familiar faces.
“I was lucky,” she said. “My community and my mom and father provided me a strong base and a strong identity, so it was easy for me to understand and value who I was.”
Humor was important, too, when dealing with the hate mail and the occasional insulting phone call.
One call, which still gives Loyd a laugh came from someone offering to pay her college tuition if she left Winter Park High. When she and her parents were all chipping in to pay her way through Tennessee State, they often joked that they should have taken the offer.
Today, Loyd has a degree in social welfare and is the administrator for the South Florida AIDS Network, which coordinates and finances services for people with HIV and AIDS. Widely respected for her tenacity, compassion and knowledge in dealking with a growing crisis and shrinking dollars, she fell in AIDS work by chance.
Moving to Miami in the early 1980s to pursue her dream of becoming a mortician, she went to school at night, earning her pay-check as a social worker for the state Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services.
It was with HRS that she was assigned the case of Wendy Blankenship, a teen-age prostitute who carried a deadly disease few agencies, least of all HRS, knew what to do about. The agency had little or no experience dealing adolescent AIDS cases, and it fell to Loyd to help figure it out.
Hearing about Loyd today, Brown, the Pinellas schools spokeswoman, isn’t surprised to hear where she has landed. Brown figured Loyd would be making a difference today, just as she did in 1965.
“It was a turning point, but we didn’t’ even know it then,” Brown said. “Only later do you realize the significance of what she did.”

On July 29, 1937, the Ideal Womans Club of Winter Park was chartered. Its members were the community minded black women of the Westside. Mrs. Mary DePugh, a new resident was it’s founder and first president.
On March 6, 1939, the women paid the initial payment on property located on Mores Blvd. to the Winter Park Land Company. The total cost of the property was 500.00. The agreement stipulated that the club would pay 125.00 per year in March 1940, 1941 and 1942. The legal description:
Lots 12 and 13, Black 33, Town of Winter Park, as per plat thereof recorded in Plat Book “A” pages 67 to 72, inclusive, Public Records of Orange County, Florida
First Congregational Church donated a building. The Ideal Womans Club provided social, economic and medical support to members of the community. This humble start resulted in today’s Mary Lee DePugh Nursing Center. The nursing center now needs the property that the existing Ideal Womans Club occupies. A new building to house the club is being built across from the current site. The existing building is scheduled for demolition unless we can “bind together” to have the building moved to another location.
The Westside AFRO-American Homeowners and Homesteaders Association want to preserve the building. As Wade Lawrence, Orange County Historic Preservation Officer stated in a letter to the Association, “The building is interesting not only for it architectural charm, but also for its historical associations through the years…
Information from club records indicate that they made quilts, rented the club for card parties, showed movies, held socials for young people, held clinics, worked with the students at the local school and Hungerford School, Eatonville, FL, they also held teas, bake sales, raffles, etc. to raise funds to support their efforts. At their meetings they would discuss such subjects as music in the home, child welfare, civic pride, etc.. The club participated in raising funds for the Red Cross and March of Dimes. They invited speakers from other community organizations such as the day nursey.
It is that some spirity of community that we are hoping to recapture and use to bind the residents of the Westside. We are determined to move forward to preserve the community that produced many successful, law abiding citizens. Please join us on 4/1/96 at the Ideal Womans Club, 120 S. Penn Ave. Winter Park, FL 32789, at 7:00 P.M. to coordinate efforts to preserve the past and secure the future. Please RSVP at 644-8753.

<text>This is the first installment in a two-part series on the west side of Winter Park. Today, the city’s founders establish a black neighborhood to provide homes for laborers.
Nearly a generation after the end of the Reconstruction era, in which black citizens in the South briefly exercised unprecedented political power, some blacks on the west side of Winter Park were still key players in the city’s government and business life.
In the 1880s and ‘90s, black residents of Winter Park owned their homes, ran businesses and won seats on the Town Council. Many more blacks, however, were the backbone of manual labor in the new resort town for New Englanders, who relied on them to pick vegetables and citrus and work as domestic help in hotels and fashionable homes.
The same neighborhood developed for blacks in the 1880s still exists within Winter Park today, long after segregation vanished from the law books.
The first white settlers came to the area in the late 1850s. But activity didn’t really take off until banker and developer Loring Chase arrived in 1881 and found land suitable for growing citrus and picturesque lakes ideal for hotel sites.
Chase and his partner, Oliver Chapman, bought 600 acres of pine land and named it Winter Park with the hope of luring rich Northerners to make their winter homes here.
They offered large lots for lakefront homes and acreage for farming. The platted streets and set aside lakeside sites for resort hotels.
In addition, 38 parcels on the town’s west side were marked “N,” for Negro, on town maps. The developers encouraged blacks to buy land and build houses. A black family could own one of the tiny 50-by-70-foot lots clustered around Hannibal Square for $20.
Chase and Chapman named the square for a famous black, a general from the ancient North African city of Carthage who fought against the Romans in the 3rd B.C.
Not only did blacks own their own homes in Winter Park, but they made marks in business and politics as well.
When the town was incorporated in 1887, Gus Henderson, the black owner of a printing business, was editor of the town’s only newspaper, The Winter Park Advocate.
The Advocate covered news in both the black and white communities, served as a forum for political debates and devoted pages of copy to promoting Winter Park.
That same year, F.R. Israel and W.B. Simpson – both black – were elected as aldermen. Re-elected in 1891, they were town leaders during an era when many blacks in Southern towns had been prevented from voting because of poll taxes.
A black has not served on the City Commission since that time.
Soon after, for reasons that are unclear now, a group of Winter Park residents tried to establish new town limits that didn’t include part of the west-side neighborhood.
Led by William Comstock, the group failed to get its way with city officials but managed to persuade the Legislature to pass the new boundaries in 1893. Much of the west side would remain an enclave outside the city until a new charter was adopted in 1925.
Next week, the west side develops with the help of white’s financial support. </text>
