It is a slender book, of only eighty pages, but it is a simple, beautifully written book . . . the biography of Mary McLeod Bethune. Titled, “She Wanted To Read,” it covers the life of a little girl who was born on a cotton plantation in South Carolina and who made her way from barefoot cotton picker to the world acclaimed college president and civic leader. It is the story of the courageous Negro girl who wanted so desperately to learn and share that learning with others. She kept at both projects from the day she walked five miles to attend school for the first time until long after she had risen to a place of honor among the world’s great . . . . a distinguished woman, proud of her country and her race, and dedicated to all man-kind. Mrs. Carruth, who has been very active in the Friends of the Winter Park Library and many civic and cultural affairs, was born in Cleveland, Ohio where she attended Flora Stone Mather College and Western Reserve University. She was graduated with an A.B. degree from Smith College, Northhampton, Massachusetts. Although she has written for magazines and newspapers, this is her first book. Mrs. Carruth, a former teacher, served as president of the trustees of Kirkland Town Library, Clinton, New York, where she lived for many years when her husband, William Massey Carruth, was associated with Hamilton College. Her book is cleverly illustrated with soft pencil sketches by Herbert McClure. It sells for $2.25 and is available in bookstores now. It should prove an inspiration to children of all races.
