In fact, it’s thriving. Remember last year when a group of local residents united, called themselves CIVIC and raised more than $250,000 to pay for the interior design and furnishings in the city’s new civic center? CIVIC has since continued to support the civic center, covering such added expenses as new front doors, hand-made ornaments for the center’s first Christmas tree and the construction of a permanent sign to be placed on Morse Blvd. in front of the building. Recently, a similar volunteer campaign called Adopt-A-Playground has been organized. And when this campaign ends, Winter Park’s eight public playgrounds will have fresh new looks and specially designed, state-of-the-art play equipment. The Adopt-A-Playground campaign was founded and is being conducted by a committee of eight local mothers in conjunction with the city’s parks and recreation department. Its purpose is to raise funds from Winter Park citizens and businesses for the renovation of local playgrounds. Dr. Wendy Brandon, chairman of the committee, said she and the other mothers decided to form the committee after becoming disappointed and concerned over the condition of the equipment in most of the parks. “We were all meeting with our kids once a month at different parks, and we started noticed how old and dilapidated the playground equipment was,” said Brandon. Please see Adopt on Page 4A Bill Carrico, the city's parks and recreation director said most of the equipment is at least 20 years old. And not only is it outdated, but much of it is rusted and /or in need of repair, he added. Funds raised by Adopt-A-Playground will be used to purchase high quality, aesthetically pleasing playground equipment and renovate the park grounds with the following goals in mind: to support constructive interaction among children, adults and families; to encourage the development of each child's physical strength and coordination; to provide opportunities for dramatic and group play in safe, aesthetically pleasing environments and to provide specialized equipment for handicapped children. The city will provide labor and administrative support to the campaign, and Carrico is working closely with the committee to provide consulting advice and support. To publicize the campaign, signs with the slogan "I'm Available" will be placed at area parks in need of funds, and once enough funds have been raised for the renovation of a park, the "I'm Available" sign will be replaced with "I've Been Adopted." Phelps Park is the first to be "adopted," thanks to a $25,000 donation from Sara and Macauley Whiting. City work crews will begin next month disassembling and removing the park's old equipment to make room for the new. In addition to the new equipment, a layer of mulch will be spread over the grounds in the play areas to serve as a cushion and to lessen the chance of injuries when children fall from the equipment. Separate play areas will be designated for older and younger children as well as areas for family activities such as picnics. To date, Adopt-A-Playground has raised more than $50,000 in cash and pledges. Plaques will be installed at playgrounds to acknowledge contributions of $1,000 or more, and some playgrounds may be renamed to honor their donors or as memorials. Surprisingly, according to Brandon and Whiting, many donors have wished to remain anonymous. "I've had several residents call and say they' d like to contribute but they don't want any, recognition. People just want to help," said Whiting. After Phelps Park's renovation is completed, the campaign will focus on Azalea Lane playground. If all goes as well as expected, playgrounds at Dinky Dock, Mead Gardens, Cady Way, Ward Park, Lake Island and Fleet Peeples Park, on Lake Baldwin will also get facelifts. "We're already seeing strong support from the community on this," said Carrico. "I'm very optimistic, and I can't say enough about what Wendy and Sara and everybody on the committee are doing for the city." During the city• s budget planning sessions last summer, Carrico had requested $5,000 to use for park improvements and maintenance. His request was denied by the city. "That ($5,000) would have just been a drop in the bucket anyway," said Carrico. "Just enough for maintenance and some very minor improvements. But we're going to have some of the nicest and best-equipped parks in Central Florida when this is finished." Vassel OF THE SENTINEL STAFF WINTER PARK - The Tiretanic is steaming toward the city and should be set in place in Ward Park by mid-November. The Tiretanic, as the ship composed of tires and lumber is called, will not be called upon to float. Designed by Christopher Clews of Learning Structures Inc., of Portsmouth, N.H., it will be used as the center-piece for a playground being planned for Ward Park as part of the Adopt-A-Playground campaign. The Ward Park project, for which about $20,000 in money and materials is being solicited, will not just be a playground. In contrast to the three other playgrounds built during the past 18 months at Phelps Park, Lake Island Park and the Azalea Lane Recreation Center, this is being created for use by all age groups. The playground area, with its swings, hanging rope bridges, spaceship and slides, will be only one aspect of the project, said Lucy and Sharon Strong, two members of the committee putting the project together. Other members include Edie Fagan, Margie Wagner and Julie Brewer. In fact, the playground's construction Nov. 12 will make it the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle being snapped into place at Ward Park. "We want to have the basketball court and picnic shelter done this summer because people can use it all through the months leading up to the playground construction," said Lucy Strong. The basketball court will be regulation high-school size, with two standard backstops at each end, two more on each side and two shorter backstops for younger - and shorter - family members. Please see PARK, 5 Construction on the court is expected to begin as soon as the committee is donated about 150 tons of limerock, with the requisite labor and equipment to install it. All other equipment and labor to build the court has been donated. Orlando Paving Co. gave 40 tons of asphalt and 500 cubic yards of clean fill, plus equipment and labor, and another construction company has helped design the court and advised on the materials needed. It also will donate the two regulation height backstops. A fitness trail will be designed for the park, taking into account two factors. It will be near the new wellness center being built by Winter Park Memorial Hospital and across the street from the Manor Care Senior Citizen residence. “We need to meet the needs of our older population, and teen-agers as well as children. This is one area of the city that does not have a playground and it has a large population of young families as well as older people,” said Sharon Strong. The wellness center is working with the committee to design the fitness trail but has not committed any money to the project. The rail will make use of some existing sidewalks along Loch Lomond Drive and wind through tree-shaded grassy areas and over a small drainage pool. Exercise stations for stretching, toning and mild strengthening will be spaced along the path, which will be about a half-mile long. Work on the fitness trail is expected to be done by late September. “This park is used so much by young families because of the Little League baseball and soccer. For children or parents not involved in the game there is nothing for them to do and no place to go,” said Lucy Strong. Most of the old, rusty and sharp-edged metal play equipment that once blighted the park has been removed in preparation for the project. Set amid spreading oaks and lush greenery, the new playground and its associated extensions will complete the circle began early last year with the construction of Whiting Playground at Phelps Park. But not 14 year-old Marjorie Manley. Manley chose instead to donate her savings to the memory of her late grandmother. The fitness trail will be named in memory of her grandmother, Marjorie Wiitkins Manley, a long-time Winter Park resident who died four years ago of cancer. Now, only one task remains before Adopt-A-Playground can reach its final goal. By Nov. 12, the committee must find 150 people willing to help build a new playground at Ward Park on Cady Way near Lakemont Avenue. The donated labor of at least 150 volunteers is needed for the Saturday,construction project because the goal of the Adopt-A-Playground committee has been to renovate play areas at the four corners of Winter Park without using city funds. "The city's not paying a penny," said Lucy Strong, one of five organizers on the committee. Other members are Sharon Strong, Julie Brewer, Edie Fagan and Margie Wagner. The next day, Nov. 13, Adopt-A-Playground will hold a grand opening celebration. Residents will be invited to the refurbished picnic area to eat 5-cent popcorn and watch the Orlando Magic dance team. A basketball tournament will be held on the renovated basketball courts. The Sunday celebration will be especially heartfelt for committee members, because the completion of the Ward Park playground, built with about $30,000 in donated material and funds, marks the end of two years of hard work. During the past 24 months, the committee has built three other playgrounds - at Phelps Park, Lake Island Park and the Azalea Lane Recreation Center -with donated materials, money and time. Ward Park is different from the other renovating projects, however, because the committee decided to make it a park with facilities for all ages. Besides renovating the playground, Lucy Strong and the others made plans to rebuild the basketball courts and the picnic area, and to install a seniors' fitness trail. "We wanted to provide something for the entire family," she said. Though heavy summer rains held up the work a bit, the basketball courts were completed last month and the picnic area and fitness trail will be ready in time for the grand opening celebration next month. Construction for Phase I – the basketball court – is set to begin within the next few weeks and should be completed by the end of the month. The court will be full-size (high school regulation) with six goal posts. Four of the goals will be standard height and two will be lower in order to accommodate use by younger children, said Strong. The second phase of the project will be the fitness trail, which professionals from the Wellness Center at Winter Park Memorial Hospital are helping to design. The third and final phase will be the playground. Designed by Learning Structures Co., playground architects from New Hampshire, the playground will not follow any particular theme, Strong said, but structures will be designed to incorporate physical coordination with creativity and constructive interaction among youngsters. The main “centerpiece” structure will be made of tires and wood in the shape of a ship and will be called the “Tiretanic.” Other structures will include a space ship, swings various climbing platforms and a picnic shelter. Tip Top Roofing Co. of Winter Park has donated materials for the picnic shelter. In addition to Lucy Strong, committee members for the Ward Park project include Sharon Strong, Margie Wagner, Edie Fagan and Julie Brewer. More than half of the $35,000 needed to complete the Ward project has been raised, Strong reported. Feb 8th, 1902 Dear Mr. Grover, It is a great pleasure to know that the Primer is soon to appear. To me it is always a joy to see an effort completed. You ask how The Sun-bonnet Babies originated; well, They began their career as a joke and they seem to have gone on their way, creating smiles, everafter. There once was a studio, with three young women in it, two painted on china and on sketched in watercolor and ink. One day a characteristic head was up for inspection, and one of the three said “Well, it’s all in the face, the character,” “I think that is not always so,” said the sketcher and thereupon drew with a few lines, a baby in a bonnet, trudging along and for decorative effect she carried a huge four-leaf-clover. This undoubtedly is the reason why all the succeeding babies were healthy, happy, lucky and wise. The idea developed and the children grew more interesting all the time, as children do, until I am almost amazed at my family. When it opened in 1956 it was Central Florida's premiere resort hotel. The Langford Hotel was located in downtown Winter Park and was convenient to shopping, the golf course, fishing, the scenic boat tours and Rollins College. It was located where the Alfond Inn stands today. The Langford's design was very modern and unique for the time. It is interesting to note that at its annual convention in November of 1957 the Florida Association of Architects presented an Award of Merit to the Langford Hotel and to William B. Harvard, Jr., its architect.
