<text>
THE WINTER PARK POST

WINTER PARK, FLA. DECEMBER 23, 1915

A CITIZEN OF WINTER PARK ADDS $5,000 TOWN HALL FUND: Modern Two Story Civic Building to be Erected with Large Auditorium Having a Seating Capacity of 300 – Town Officials Will Be Provided with Roomy Offices and Board of Trade with Fine Quarters.

Owing to the fact that so much agitation has been caused against the placing of the town hall in the park a citizen has made to council through the mayor a proposition that if certain lots are secured by the council, which lots can be secured for $850, that the said citizen will add to council’s funds available for the town hall five thousand dollars in cash to construct a civic building that will be far more in keeping with Winter Park’s progressiveness and prosperity than the building contemplated in the in the park. As council has appropriated two thousand dollars for this purpose, and as the lots will only cost eight hundred and fifty dollars they will have remaining eleven hundred and fifty dollars to add to the five thousand dollars donation, making approximately six thousand dollars available for the building.

Ever since the mayor visited Valrico and saw the magnificent civic building Valrico had he has been (?) and feels great satisfaction in the fact that one of his dearest friends should come to the rescue for Winter Park in such a magnificent manner.

The building will be of two stories and of white faced cement block construction, having on the first floor a council chamber and small auditorium, mayor’s office, clerk’s office, and a large fireproof vault for the safe storage of the town books and records. It will also have toilet rooms and lavatories on the first floor, at the rear end of the building, four cells, the cells to be all concrete, floors, walls, and ceiling, provided with toilets – one cell for white male prisoners, one for white female prisoners, one for colored male prisoners, and one for colored female prisoners, the cells all opening directly out doors with no communication with the rest of the building or with each other.

The second floor will be an auditorium of the entire size of the building, so arranged that it may be used for any kind of meeting or entertainment that the citizens of Winter Park may desire to have. Chairs will be installed, giving a seating capacity of about three hundred, so arranged that the chairs may be removed at any time and the entire floor used for dancing or any other purpose desired. The Winter Park band will probably give a series of concerts during the coming season in the auditorium.

The Winter Park Board of Trade will be furnished with quarters down stairs for the use of their secretary and executive committee meetings, while their big general meetings will be held up stairs. In this Winter Park is following the lead of Tampa, which has provided the Tampa Board of Trade with magnificent facilities in its new city hall building.

Winter Park is certainly lucky to receive such splendid gifts for public improvements from some of her wealthy residents who want the town to grow. They are Christmas gifts of a substantial nature and will be looked upon with pride as the happy return of the season comes and goes.

EIGHTY-EICHT[1] LIGHTS IN NEW SIGN: It Will Be Twenty-Four Inches Wide and Twenty Feet Long

A citizen of Winter Park has agreed that he will pay for the equipment and installation of our electric sign with letters sixteen inches high reading “Winter Park,” to be installed near the Coast Line depot so that it may be seen by passengers on Coast Line trains, provided council will furnish current for the lamps. Council has agreed to do this and the sign is being constructed.

The back of the sign will be of black heart cypress one and a quarter inches thick, twenty-four inches wide, and about twenty feet long, a solid board painted in black and enamelled in black. The letters will be of solid vitrified porcelain, cream white, recessed in the centers for the electric lamps which will be twelve watts each, eighty-eight being required for the sign.

The porcelain is of course glazed and is always easy to keep clean and should make a very handsome appearance.

To Their Friends.

Mr. and Mrs. J.I. Walsh wish to thank their friends for their solicitude during their illness and death of their little daughter, Irvina.

DEATH OF FORMER RESIDENT

Dr. W.F. Blackman received a telegram last Tuesday announcing the death on the morning of that day at her home in Naugatuck, Conn., of Mrs. John Howard Whittemore, a former parishioner of Dr. Blackman’s and an intimate friend of the family.

Dr. Blackman’s book, “The Making of Hawaii,” which was published in 1899 by the Macmilian Company was “Inscribed with Love and Gratitude to John Howard Whittemore and Julia Spencer Whittemore.”

A number of people in Winter Park still recall Mr. and Mrs. Whittemore and their children, as guests for many seasons of the Old Seminole Hotel. At that time and for several years subsequently, Mrs. Whittemore owned the lot opposite the Batchelor home, which afterwards came into the pessession[2] of Rollins College, and where Dr. and Mrs. Blackman now live.

It was through the suggestion of Mrs. Whittemore to Mr. W.C. Comstock that Dr. Blackman was called to the presidency of the college, to whose funds he contributed many thousands of dollars, and of whose Board of Trustees he was at one time a member of years ago.

Mrs. Whittemore was a woman of singular loveliness of person and of character., as well as keenness of intellect; a son and daughter survive her.

A Christmas Hope

Though the nations destroy each other,

And the countries are red with war,

Still over the Child and Mother

And the hope of the Heavenly Brother

They shall bury the sword and sabre

And the weapons of war shall cease,

And the glorified tools of labor

They shall wield for the world’s increase,

And man shall love his neighbor

In the creed of the great new Peace.

WILL BUILD $3000 BOAT HOUSE ON BEAUTIFUL LAKE OSCEOLA

A contract has been let to Henry Green, builder, by the Seminole Hotel Company for a large and beautiful boat house to be built upon the banks of Osceola on the east side of the New Seminole Hotel. The design for the boat house was furnished by a prominent New York architect and the style of the architecture will conform with that of the New Seminole. The central part of the building will be finished upon the enterior* with stucco and will have lattice effect that will be covered with vines. A supply of canoes and rowboats have been ordered an this will be one more added to, the many amusements and attractions furnished to the hotel guests of the New Seminole.

The boat house will be twenty-eight feet in width and seventy feet in length along the shore, and will be sufficiently large to house the hotel launches as well as the livery boats and the private boats owned by guests. The total cost already been begun and Mr. Green promises to have it in perfect readiness by the time the season fairly opens.

Christmas Vespers.

Because of the proximity of Christmas, the Sunday afternoon vesper service of December 19, consisted almost entirely of music numbers. The special Yuletide program was prepared by Prof. (E.)(F.)(H.)(P.)? S. Pope*, and proved a fitting type of worship.

The service was opened by Miss Isabelle E. Denison with a beautiful organ prelude, followed by the scripture reading by Dean A. Enyart. Prof. Pope’s solo, “The Rebuke.” Recitation, “Behold and See,” aria from Handel’s Messiah was one of the most appealing (of) the musical selections. A quartet consisting of Prof. Pope, Miss Margery Waide, Miss Viola Siew, and Mr. James I. Noxon, render(ed) Very charmingly Praitorio’s “How a Rose E’er Blooming” and “The First Noel” and Holy Night.”[3] Probably the most inspiring of all was the anthem sung by the entire choir, “O Zion, Thou Tellest” (Buck). Miss Denison’s pipe organ selections, among which was Guilmant’s “Nuptial March” were played with this artist’s accustomed feeling and skill, and added greatly to the afternoon’s service.

Christmas Holidays.

Wednesday, December 22, at noon, the Christmas recess began and the college studies were discontinued until January 3. The majority of the students residing within the state left on the afternoon train for their various homes. Quite a number of the northern young people are planning a house party for the holidays.

DEMAND FOR FRUIT WILL BE GREAT: Winter Park Fruit Company will Ship Bulk In February and March

Following its usual custom the Winter Park Fruit Company closed its packing house December 15, and will not start operating again until after the first of January. Prices have held up very well so far, but there is always quite a slump in the market after the Christmas trade and orange growers generaly[4] hold up their shipments until the market gets cleared up and people get hungry again for oranges.

The bulk of the fruit which will pass through the packing house of the Winter Park Fruit Company will be shipped in the months of February and March. H.A. Ward, President of the Company says, “We look for at least $1.25 a box for oranges on the tree during those months and between $1.50 and $2.00 for gropefruit[5]. We may possibly get still better prices, if* at least that much.

In response to an urgent appeal for aid received by several women of Maitland from Mr. Marcus Fogg, Superintendant of the Children’s Aid Society of Jacksonville, in which he put forth the urgent need for immediate financial aid. It was resolved by the women they adopt the plan outlined by Mr. Fogg whereby in a simple and agreeable manner they could help the cause of supporting the many destitute children now in the Home in Jacksonville.

So the “Cycle Teas,” Mr. Foggs’[6] suggestion, began four weeks ago and ended December 20th. The sum of fifteen dollars has in this wav[7] been realized and sent to Mr. Fogg Mrs. John S. Stuart entertained by giving ten cent rides to many in her auto. Mrs. I. McCullough also gave generously and all the women have given their time to be able to help in this good cause. Maitland is not a large town and the population has not yet been added to by its members of winter residents or the sum sent would have been larger. Later in the season the same plans might be repeated when larger sums will be realized.

There is no cause that so appeals to the hearts of men and women as caring for the destitute baby orphans, who in this home are not only well cared for in the present, but careful provision is given to provide homes for their future.

So let us not stop here in our efforts but from time to time bear in mind that his institution is carried on solely by the voluntary contributions of the charitable people of the state. Let Maitland not be behind in doing her share.

BRIGHT AS DAY

Acting as a committee of one for the council Mayor Temple has made arrangements with the Atlantic Coast Line that they will permit the town to put new nitrogen lamps the full length of their depot, a distance of about thirty feet, and the Coast Line willhave[8] them all lit before the arrival and until the departure of all night passenger trains both north and south. There will be one of these lamps every 10 feet, which will make the whole shed as bright as day.

BOTH AWARDED GOLD CERTIFICATES: Winter Park’s Hotels, The New Seminole and The Inn, - Called the Most Perfect in Florida by State’s Higher Authorities.

After a very rigid inspection by a state hotel inspector last week, The Inn and the New Seminole Hotel were each awarded a gold certificate by the state hotel commissioner, a fact over which R.P. Foley, president and manager of the Seminole Hotel company, is naturally much elated. These certificates are only given to hotels complying with the very stringent state laws regarding construction, safety, sanitation, equipment, cleanliness of kitchen and sleeping rooms, heating, lighting, appearance and cleanliness of employes[9], care of food, etc. and they are, of course. much prized by hotel men fortunate enough to secure them. Each feature considered is given a certain number of points, two or more. The New Seminole was given a perfect score of 100 and The Inn a score of 99. The Inn was inspected just before the improvements were completed, and a little of the new equipment was still lacking.

The inspector, of course, had no right to pass upon this equipment until he might see it; otherwise Mr. Foley says, that house would also have received a perfect score. Last year the New Seminole was given a score of 100 and the gold certificate, and (award?) was accompanied by a letter from Hon. A.L. Messer, state hotel commissioner. to Mr. Foley, in which he said: “I wish to compliment you, very much. on the score of your hotel made by inspector O.G. Husband. Your hotel, so far, is but the second to reach the 100th mark in this state.” To have Winter Park’s tow beautiful hotels rated as the most perfect of Florida’s many fine houses is something of which every citizen should be proud.

BULLS IS BULLS

Marshall Overstreet rounded up twenty-nine head of range cattle Tuesday morning belonging to T. Wofford that had come in from the woods to enjoy their breakfast on the Winter Park golf links and showed them the way to the pound.

Mr. Wofford appeared before Mayor Temple on Wednesday in the company of Marshall Overstreet and asked that the five dollar pounding fee for the bulls be set aside in his case as, he said, the bulls belonging te[10] him in the Winter Park pound are very young and cannot therefore yet be classed as bulls.

Mayor Temple answered that the town ordinance did not make any provision for the ages of the bulls. And that as far as the ordinance was concerned a bull was a bull no matter what its age might be. Mr. Wofford then said that he thought only animals that were old enough to be dangerous should be classed as bulls, but the mayor was unable to grant his request as held that he was obliged to enforce the law as it is written.

An interesting discussion came up in connection with the ranging of wilp cattle. Mayor Temple said that he thought it was only a matter of a few years when there would be no free range in the state of Florida. “There are millions of acres of fine pasture lands in this state,” said Mayor Temple, “and the time will coue[11] when cattlemen will have to provide themselves with these lands and fence them in if they wish to continue in the cattle business.”

THE IDEAL SIZE.

Since the first number of The Winter Park Post came out the the subsequent issues have been largely an experiment to discover what should constitute the ideal size for a newspaper suitable to the population and support of Winter Park. The present number repesents[13] the result of our experiment, and is therefore, for the present at least, the ideal size.

Greatly as we regret it we are obliged to discontinue temporarily the publishing of the Rollins College feature and the Audubon Society report. This is necessitated by the fact that we are now limited for space. We will however publish anything in the way of news relative to these two institutions, and will give them just as much consideration as we do any other news feature in which we are interested.

We feel sure that the change we are making will not be a permanent one, and that the time will come when we may not only return to the number of pages with which we started out, but will launch into an even larger publication. In fact, this is what we will have to do if we hope to keep pace with the progress of Winter Park.

We repeat our words of last week. “Be sure to bring your children on the opening night – Christmas Eve. Santa Claus will be waiting for them and very much disappointed if they are not there. The program will not be long, and will begin promptly at seven.”

Social Life in Winter Park.

BY CHOLLY WINTER

The opening of the Conntry[18] Club in Winter Park for its second season, recalls to mind the great advantage there is in such a meeting place for the social life of a town. Weren’t it notfor[19] the country club there might be a division of society into the cliques so common in many resorts and hence a narrowing of interest. The Country Club during its first season las year furnished a meeting place for old and young alike, and it was not unusual to see a debutante in animated conversation with a judge or an elderly banker, while dancing, golf or bridge-whist furnished entertainment for all ages and classes. Some hotels in fashionable resorts have a great disadvantage if there is no such common meeting place near by as a country club.

If a dance is given in the hotel for the entertainment of the younger element in the hotel, the older guests who have no interest in dancing, are kept awake by the music and revelry. If, on the other hand, the desires of the older guests are catered to and the hotel is kept quiet, the young people find life a burden and are glad to leave for some more lively locality. Then, too, there may be but little opportunity for the casual hotel guest to meet the residents in the vicinity socially. Winter Park’s resident society is one of the greatest charms of the place, and it is within the doors of the Country Club that __ hospitality is most frequently extended to the passing visitor. The advantages are not all on the side of the latter, either. Last season was marked by the presence of many distinguished guests at the New Seminole hotel, and it was a privilege greatly enjoyed by the residents of our winter colony to meet them at the Country Club and to invite them to the more intimate realms of the home. Among these, were to be noted no less than four judges, one of whom is now a resident of Winter Park and the owner of “Woodmere,” one of the most beautiful estates. It might not be amiss to give a brief description of some of these distinguished visitors.

The present owner of “Woodmere” on the shores of Lake Maitland is the Hon. William James Wallace who is a native of Syracuse, N.Y..[20] and is the son of E. Fuller and Lydia W. Wallace. He was a student of Hamilton College, graduating with the degree of L.L.B. in 1875 and later from Syracuse University in 1882. He married Alice Heyward Wheelwright of New York in 1878. He was admitted to practice law in 1858 and in 1973[21] became the mayor of Syracuse. Following this he became U.S. district judge for the Northern District of New York, then U.S. circuit judge in the 2nd judicial circuit from 1882 to 1907. Judge Wallace is a Republican and belongs to many famous clubs. among them the Metropolitan and Union League Clubs of New York and the Fort Orange Club of Albany. Judge Wallace[22] daughter, Miss Madeline A. Wallace, one of Winter Park’s most charming hostesses, has recently returned to Winter Park and is assisting Judge Wallace in the beautifying of “Woodmere”

Among the yearly hotel guests is also another distinguished man, whose acquaintance has given pleasure to many in Winter Park and whose wife also won many friends while here.

Hon. William E. Werner was admitted to the bar in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1880 and was made a justice of the Supreme Court of New York in 1894. In 1900 he became Justice of the Court of Appeals of New York State. Judge Werner is a Republican and he and Mrs. Werner and the three charming daughters are prominent in the social circles of Rochester, N.Y. He is a very enthusiastic golfer and has few rivals in dexterity on the greens.

New York has been generous to Winter Park in sending us its judges. Another member of the bench of that state visits Winter Park regularly, and is also a golf enthusiast.

Hon. Josiah Taylor Marean is a native of New York State and was graduated from the State Normal School at Albany.

He studied law in the offices of Emerson, Goodrich and Knowlton and was admitted to the bar soon after. He practiced law in New York and Brooklyn for many years and became district attorney of Kings County in 1897 and later was made Justice of the Supreme Court of New York. Judge and Mrs. Marean own a beautiful estate on the shores of Long Island Sound. Mrs. Marean is related to Mrs. Robert Dhu Macdonald of Winter Park.

Our national capital[23] has also given us its quota of legal lights in Hon. Augustus Storrs Worthington and Judge Perkins who were guests with their families at the New Seminole las winter and are expected to return this season.

They both members of the famous Chevy Chase Conntry[24] Club, which is frequented by the diplomatic set of the capitol and are also ardent golfers.

Col. Worthington is a soldier as well as a lawyer, and served through the Civil War in the Ohio infantry. He studied law in George Washington University and has risen high in the legal profession, and has been district attorney of the District of Columbia. Col. Worthington is well known to Winter Park society, having visited at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Blackman on many occasions. He is a brother of Mrs. Blackman. His wife is prominent socially in Washington and his daughter is an accomplished musician. Winter Park people were greatly entertained at several musicales last winter when they had the opportunity of hearing her highly cultivated voice in selections from the German and Italian opera.
