Anne Stone

Winter Park student • Winter Park teacher.

Born on January 1st, 1896 in Pennsylvania, Anne Catherine Stone came to Winter Park with her family at the age of ten. Her parents (father Benjamin William Stone and mother Fanny Green Stone) were originally from England, but immigrated to the U.S. shortly after their marriage. Anne had two siblings, William and Florence.

All of the Stone children attended Winter Park Public Schools and went on to Rollins Academy. Anne then attended Rollins College, where she earned her BA in 1918. She also secured her first job in 1918 . . . teaching Latin and Ancient History at Ocala High School.

During her career in education, she taught in several places throughout the South: Florida, Virginia, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Georgia. She returned to Florida in 1928, when she took a position at Winter Park High School teaching Latin, French and Spanish. The last positions she held were in Orlando, first at the high school and then at Orlando Junior College.

Ms Stone was quite active in a variety of organizations. Here are a few of them: Rollins Club, Casa Iberia, the English Speaking Union, Florida Education Association, Orange County Historical Society, and the Winter Park Historical Association.

Her brother William was an entomologist who was employed by the Department of Agriculture. Her sister, Florence earned her PhD. in Chemistry and Microbiology. She taught in at the university level in New York as an instructor of Bacteriology, Microbiology, and Immunology.

Anne Stone died on November 13, 1978 in Winter Park at 82 years of age. She was buried in Palm Cemetery.
